Matias is our strongest Traders’ Best Bet at 4 units at $2.30 in Randwick Race 1. The Everest and King Charles Stakes are no-bets for our traders this week.

One of the great days of the Australian turf lies ahead this Saturday as both states host sensational racing. Let’s run our eye over all the big races and find some best bets.

Feature Races

Randwick

The Everest – Randwick – 1200m G1

Ka Ying Rising back to defend after looking as good as ever first up in Hong Kong, absolutely smashing the clock. Not looking too far into the trial after last year but the effort was satisfactory. Seems the wet track holds a few fears for the camp depending on how wet it gets. Drawn perfectly out wide though and the $1.50 almost seems a bet, but will wait and see how conditions play out. Tempted seems the only danger after her slashing win in the Premiere. Closing splits were enormous and any sting out of the ground enhances her chances. Hate the inside draw for her though and she meets Ka Ying Rising 5.5kg worse off from last year. Joliestar can run well but I don’t see her winning, and likewise Jimmysstar who looks to go back from the draw. Ninja gets the right run but this is the most pressure he would have ever seen. The rest making up the numbers. No bet.

King Charles Stakes – Randwick – 1600m G1

Small field for the G1. Pride Of Jenni adds some spice with a fast tempo expected. If anything, I think it suits both Autumn Glow and Ceolwulf, who both love a bunny to chase. In particular Ceolwulf, who has won this race the last two years and loves a high-pressure contest. He’s going as well as ever, it’s just whether or not he can knock over Autumn Glow who did seem to handle him last start. Blinkers go on and this has been the target race all along. I lean Autumn Glow however, who is just a freak at the mile and set to peak third up. Too short to get involved and will just watch.

Silver Eagle – Randwick – 1300m

Good race this. Skyhook completely airborne and would have been favourite for the Epsom had they gone that way. Goes 1500m back to 1300m here but drawn perfectly and a wet track is no concern. Super hard to beat again but there doesn’t look a whole lot of value in the price with an eye to the Golden Eagle. Decorum was the horse that stood out to me here off two sensational wins this time in. Gets the suck run from two and getting back to Randwick will suit him much better. Night Agent was the other who ran time the other day having to sit outside the lead. Trialled up stylishly in the interim and although he has a wide draw, hopefully he can offset it early or find a spot with cover. Doesn’t want it too wet however.

Beiwacht I’m happy to pot but he’s just not one of mine despite getting favours here. Platinum Pantheon was very good first up and runs well, as does Estremo who comes out of the same race and ran some of the better closing splits of the meeting in the worst part of the track. 50/1 for him is too big and he won’t be a loser for me. Happy with the two lightly raced horses here who can hopefully take the next step.

Decorum @ $8.00 (0.7 Units)
Night Agent @ $15.00 (0.4 Units)
Estremo @ $51.00 (0.1 Units)

Caulfield

Caulfield Cup – Caulfield – 2400m G1

$5 the field for the major. Cosmic Crusader a worthy favourite as the best-rated horse in this field coming off a good win in the Turnbull on the wet deck. First time at 2400m and the wide draw puts me off, but he can of course win. The Turnbull form in all honesty looks complete junk and I couldn’t possibly take $8 Saint George or Zahrann off what they did there. They get back on top of the ground but would have to improve immensely and it doesn’t look the platform I want for a Caulfield Cup winner. My take is that this race is fairly ordinary and if the internationals turn up they win.

Enfjaar was the one that interested me most. I liked his win at Goodwood beating a nice horse in Opportunity and he maps well from the inside. Wine Dark Sea right in the game despite the draw and gets D Lane. She’s A Hustler may be a run short but I think she is a big improver. Royal Supremacy with a perfect platform and set to peak. The metropolitan form is prominent but they don’t look like getting starts. Plenty more with chances. Enfjaar and Wine Dark Sea are the horses I want to find, with She’s A Hustler and Royal Supremacy also in my book.

Wine Dark Sea @ $9.00 (1.3 Units)
Enfjaar @ $11.00 (1 Unit)
Royal Supremacy @ $13.00 (0.4 Units)
She’s A Hustler @ $17.00 (0.3 Units)

Thousand Guineas – Caulfield – 1600m G1

Not a bad Thousand Guineas this year and a competitive market. A few holes in it for mine with Saintly Dancer as favourite coming off the big win in the Edward Manifold on a Heavy 10. Back to a dry track here and sixth up for the prep. Could not get her anywhere near $4. Over The Bridge very good in both starts but goes six furlongs to the mile and surely they have to ride cold from the draw. Again, I think much too short. Regal Ambition is the filly I think should be favourite. Rounded them up off a slow tempo last start and just screams miler. Perfectly prepared here third up and I think she’s in the finish.

De Armas off the Sydney form ran as well as she could in the Flight with the steep rise in trip. The figures out of that race are suspect so happy to leave her. Pretty Baby likewise is deep into her prep. Sing Your Song was the other horse who could do something here. She was a princess series horse for the camp before running into a few setbacks. Should have finished closer at the Kenso last start and gets the suck run here from the low draw. Backing both and perhaps not wisely taking on the might of Maher.

Regal Ambition @ $4.80 (1.3 Units)
Sing Your Song @ $15.00 (0.4 Units)

Traders’ Best Bets

Randwick Race 1 – Matias

Target race to get into the big dance and his run first up was more than acceptable. Hopefully the inside gate is ok early in the day, but he has the most upside in this field.

Matias @ $2.30 (4 Units)

Randwick Race 2 – Pin Up Sheila

No luck in running first up when the market completely steamed her. Churchill’s Choice went well first up in a slow-run race and will relish the step to the mile.

Unleeshing @ $3.30 (2.2 Units)
Churchill’s Choice @ $7.00 (0.8 Units)

Randwick Race 5 – Lord Remplap

Tough race and would have liked a rider change, but this horse has decent ability and should have finished closer last time.
